Lee Sells
Nominated by:Dionne Reese & Bobbie Johnson
When you first see Lee Sells it is hard to believe that this “cool looking guy” would be such a willing participant of any activity, from getting down and dirty in a sandbox to coasting down a tunnel slide with a seven-year-old. He does it all, with a smile on his face.
Lee has been a blessing to a family that has three children with disabilities ranging in age from 7 to 20. He is a support to each one and he has earned the trust and respect of this busy family. He has played an active role in this family’s day to day life.
Lee has built an extraordinary relationship with the oldest son, Brian. Brian just graduated from high school and is in the process of learning certain life skills to become independent and hopefully live on his own. Lee has learned that every moment can be a learning experience for Brian. He makes sure he is constantly finding new ways to bring real life situations to Brian’s attention. Brian recently received his driving permit. Brian played an integral part in helping him learn all the rules of the road. When Lee was driving he would ask Brian to identify the road signs and what they mean. Brian learned the signs and rules quicker and easier with the real life approach Lee created for him.
Brian also struggles with making timely decisions. When entering the real world this is a skill that is needed. Lee is working on teaching him this lesson by using real life situations. When Lee takes Brian to Sioux Falls, SD, Lee informs Brian the exits that are coming up and what activities are around that exit. Brian now knows he needs to make a decision on what he wants to do in Sioux Falls before he goes by the exit. If he takes too long, Lee teaches him he needs to make a different choice. This is sometimes a hard, but necessary lesson to learn.
Lee also helped Brian with planning and working on a budget. When Brian graduated from high school, Lee helped him plan the entire party. They looked at what he could afford and Lee had Brian go and buy it all. In order to make the day extra special for Brian and his parents, Lee took Brian’s two younger siblings to a motel during the party so Brian could enjoy the party and be the center of attention.
Lee also has a wonderful relationship with the two youngest children, Sierra and Duncan. He has learned different approaches that work best with each child’s personality and learning style. He has played such a vital role in this family’s life he is now asked to attend the children’s planning meetings and give input on what is next for the three children.
Lee shows us all what a great in-home support DSP means to a family and how influential they can be when they are there for the right reason.
